Architectural Art Deco Mosaic Custom Design & Craftsmanship

Architectural design – Caisse d’Épargne Bretagne Pays de la Loire

This 11 sqm architectural mosaic was custom-designed and handcrafted for the Caisse d’Épargne Bretagne Pays de la Loire, located in the heart of Place Graslin in Nantes, directly facing the Théâtre Graslin and the iconic restaurant La Cigale.

The installation features seven vertical mosaic panels (50 × 180 cm) seamlessly integrated into the building façade, complemented by four larger panels (190 × 60 cm) installed within the entrance hall of the new branch.

Crafted on Wedi backer boards and precisely fitted into the architectural framework, this bespoke mosaic installation presents a refined linear composition designed to enhance the urban landscape. Blending contemporary mosaic design with historic surroundings, the project creates a lasting dialogue with the architectural heritage of the district.

Custom Design & Artisanal Craftsmanship

Inspired by the iconic Art Deco aesthetic of Place Graslin, the graphic concept is built around fan-shaped patterns, creating a continuous visual rhythm throughout the composition. This custom architectural mosaic primarily features French porcelain stoneware, enhanced with Bisazza glass mosaic tiles and refined inserts of 24-carat gold tesserae from the Italian studio Brecci Glass, adding depth, luminosity, and a luxurious finish.

The design, fabrication, and installation of this bespoke mosaic required approximately 350 hours of meticulous work, reflecting a high level of technical expertise and precise artisanal craftsmanship.

This project highlights how contemporary mosaic design can be fully integrated into architecture, combining artistic creation, long-lasting durability, and strong cultural identity within an urban heritage context.

Graphic Design Development

Based on the architectural elevation of the façade and the specific site constraints, several custom mosaic design concepts were developed, exploring a range of patterns, frames, and decorative compositions. Different variations in rhythm, proportions, and detailing were carefully studied to achieve a balanced and refined architectural result.

Each mosaic panel was designed individually while contributing to a cohesive overall composition, allowing the client to progressively refine and validate the project throughout the design process. This collaborative approach ensured a tailored outcome aligned with both aesthetic vision and architectural requirements.

Ongoing dialogue guided the precise adjustment of fan-shaped motifs, framing elements, and transitions between panels, while anticipating technical aspects such as alignments, junctions, and material palettes ensuring a seamless integration into the architectural façade.
